Solid Waste Management Strategy and the Chakaleri Material Recovery Facility (MRF)
On 15th March 2023, the Governor of Taita Taveta, H.E Andrew Mwadime, presided over the official launch of the project aimed at constructing a Material Recovery Facility at Chakaleri and building enterprise amongst the women and youth involved in waste recycling. The occasion, which took place at Chakaleri in Mwatate, also served to launch the County Solid Waste Management Strategy developed through the support of UN-Habitat.
CSUDP has partnered with UN-Habitat to implement an 18-month project under the Go-Blue program aimed at supporting the County government of Taita Taveta to upgrade its waste recovery facility at Chakaleri and support the involvement of women and young people in waste recycling and management to create employment opportunities. This project feeds into the Go Blue Result Area 2 – “Connecting People, Cities and the Ocean: Innovative Land-Sea Planning and Management for a Sustainable and Resilient Kenyan Coast”. The project will focus on establishing a viable material recovery facility at Chakaleri disposal site that will serve to inspire and grow waste recycling business amongst the women and youth waste actors for improved income and employment.
