Nakuru County: A Vision for Urban Regeneration and Development
CSUDP, as the Convener of the Just City Working Group (JCWG), moderated a workshop on Nakuru County Urban regeneration on 28th February 2023. Nakuru County has set on a path of reimagining their urban regeneration within the framework of the Urban Areas and Cities Act (UACA) of 2011 (amended 2019). This was the outcome of the workshop convened by FES through the JCWG and SJPTWG.
This workshop, that also enlisted the participation of UN-Habitat, was intended to harmonize and build synergy on the urban development arena as defined by the six-point urban strategy of the Governor of Nakuru. The CECM responsible for urban development accompanied by six Chief Officers representing an equal number of departments shared their urban related strategies at the workshop. A key recommendation from this workshop was the immediate need to conceptualize and re-imagine the urban development landscape in Nakuru County, particularly given that at least six municipalities and seven townships were in the process of acquiring new urban status in accordance to UACA. There are also at least 120 market centres in Nakuru County.
CSUDP will work with Nakuru County through the department of Housing and Urban Development to research and consolidate a position paper on the ‘Reimagining Nakuru Urban Regeneration’ with support from FES. It is expected that the outcome will be featured at the very first Kenya Urban Forum to be hosted in Nakuru between 23 – 26 May 2023.
