The Just City Working Group (JCWG) held a mid-year review workshop on 6th July 2023 to reflect on the progress and challenges of the first half of the year and to plan for the remaining half. The workshop was held in a hybrid manner with the physical session taking place at the Westwood Hotel and attended by a total of 14 members.
This sitting reviewed the achievements and opportunities that emerged in the first half of the year, such as the Nakuru Vision 2050 process, the Nakuru Urban Re-imagination concept, the Nakuru Urban Resilience Strategy process, the UN Assembly for UN-Habitat in June 2023, and the first Kenya Urban Forum in June 2023. The workshop also discussed how the JC narrative was advanced through these platforms and how it was linked with sustainable urban development discourse.
There was a consensual agreement on the priority actions for the rest of the year, which include: organizing a Trialog workshop in Urban October month, developing a βJustβ Urban Resilience Dashboard for Nakuru, conducting a Nakuru Voluntary Local Review on SDG indicators, preparing for the Africa JC conference in 2024, holding dialogues on JC with various stakeholders, and co-producing knowledge on Reimagining Nakuru Urban. The workshop mandated the secretariat to develop a work plan and budget for these actions and to report on the progress on a regular basis. The workshop also discussed on ways of vetting and evaluating parties interested in joining the working group and finally welcomed new members who joined the JCWG and expressed their commitment to work together for a just city.
