Reflecting on WUF12: Advancing Sub-National Efforts Towards SDG Targets
The World Urban Forum 12 (WUF12) provided a pivotal platform for reflecting on and advancing sub-national efforts towards meeting the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Embracing the principle of leaving no one and no place behind, this forum set the stage for both retrospecting and prospecting on the progress and future of urban development.
George Wasonga, CEO of Civil Society Urban Development Platform (CSUDP), participated as a panelist in the session on sub-national reporting to accelerate sustainable development at all levels. He shared his real-life experiences from the development of Nakuru's Voluntary Local Review (VLR), a process enriched by years of dedicated work on the Just City agenda. This agenda emphasizes inclusivity, democracy, rights, and dignity, ensuring that urban development benefits all members of the community.
Insights from George Wasonga
The Nakuru VLR Journey
The Nakuru VLR stands as a testament to the collaborative efforts between CSUDP, Nakuru's local government, and UNHABITAT. This digital platform has enabled Nakuru to document and share its progress towards the SDGs, providing a model for other cities to follow. George highlighted the importance of this process, noting how it has amplified the voices of the community and ensured that development is both inclusive and democratic.
Enriching Discussions with Global Leaders
Sharing the panel with Mayors and Regional Government Leaders from around the world was an enriching and highly informative experience. These discussions underscored the critical role of local governments in achieving the SDGs and the need for more cities to adopt the VLR approach. George emphasized the urgency of urging more cities to board the VLR 'Bus', advocating for widespread adoption of this valuable tool.
Moving Forward
As we reflect on the insights gained from WUF12, CSUDP remains committed to advancing the Just City agenda and supporting sub-national efforts towards sustainable development. We look forward to continuing our work with local governments, communities, and international partners to ensure that no one and no place is left behind.
